Quote... Unquote - Angelfire

Angelfire (Angelfire - Trilogy)"I guess it's true that love makes you blind."
"No," my mom said. "It doesn't make you blind. You're very, very aware of everything about the one you truly love, whether you know it from what your eyes tell you or your heart. So no, love doesn't make you blind. It paralyzes you until you can't breathe or run away from it."

Summary:
When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.
Review:

I was surprised how dark this book is! Based on the summary, it would be full of action and I guess adventure. But it seems that there's more to the story that we should find out.

The book started a little slow. It took a few chapters before I get enthusiastic about it. Ellie is clueless about her true identity untill she meets Will. What she doesn't know is that she has an important role to play to save this world. I like the concept of angels and demons here. Such a great idea. I haven't read anything about angels in a while so this is a good start. Ellie's character looks like a weakling at first but when action takes place, you'd know that she's a kick-ass heroine. I love Will's character. He's only not good looking physically. The way he expresses himself and the way he fights, he's so admirable. His mysterious character would want you to read the book constantly to find out more things about him.

There are certain events that didn't really interest me at all. There are lots of actions going on but don't really answer the questions I have at the back of my mind. The book has this great concept but needs more elaboration. Well since this is a series, maybe the answers to my questions are on the succeeding books. Oh, I love the cover!

Angelfire is action-packed and well written. The information you'll learn in the book, especially towards the end, is quite astonishing. Will definitely read the next books in the series!

Summary:
In alternating chapters, Bryce and Juli tell the story of their relationship, beginning in second grade when Bryce moves in across the street from Juli. Juli instantly develops a crush on Bryce, who does not reciprocate, and throughout elementary school he tries to avoid her persistent and unwelcome attentions.

In middle school, however, they both begin to notice Bryce's substantial character flaws. Just as Bryce begins to try to change, and to notice Juli's good points, her ardor starts to cool. Meanwhile their families, and their perceptions of their world, also undergo dramatic changes.
Review:

This was an easy and a simple read but you will be surprised how good this book is! The book is cute in it's own way. Since I'm tired of reading book series, I decided to give this a shot. It's been on my radar for months now and I heard that it was adapted into a movie as well.

The book started with Bryce's point of view and his version of their first meeting. Just reading the first chapter already caught my attention to read it all the way to the end. Each chapter switches narration from Bryce talking to Juli talking, so you really get both sides of the story. You can feel with the switch of voice how each of them reacted on different kind of events from the story. I think that's a good way to also get to know the characters more.

I love Juli's character. She's this weird but witty girl who will do everything to get her crush's attention. The only thing is she won't look beyond what her eyes are seeing. And this really remind me of my childhood days. That stage in your life - first crush, first kiss, first love.

Flipped is written in a unique way wherein it captures the readers with it's simple but meaningful narration. I'm gonna watch the movie soon! :)

Summary:
Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew—just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road—diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards—this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.
Review:

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour is a fine read. I don't know what the craze is all about this book but it's not what I expected it to be.

The story is about moving on. Amy is in the dullest moment of her life after her father died in a car accident. She ends up not being herself anymore and tends to disconnect herself with other people. Her mother decides to sell their house in California and move to Connecticut. Her mother asks her friend's son Roger to drive the car with Amy. Together, they take this epic detour that they don't realize will make a big impact to their lives.

The book started a little slow so I was kinda bored in the first few chapters. What I liked about this book are the playlists! It's just fun that these songs are very much associated with their journey. I guess it would feel like you're with them while they drive from one state to another. The characters seemed to be well developed but I couldn't really connect myself with them. It's just a little too much what Amy has to feel about her father's loss. Well I guess that's what you would really feel if you keep on blaming yourself.

The story was okay and you can even learn from it. It's pretty wholesome (oh yeah, this is a YA book right? lol). I guess I just expected too much because I've seen good reviews of the book. Although it was not that great, it didn't leave me disappointed. Overall, I still liked the book! :)

Summary:
Love is all you need...or is it? Penny's about to find out in this wonderful debut.

Penny is sick of boys and sick of dating. So she vows - no more. It's a personal choice...and, of course, soon everyone wants to know about it. And a few other girls are inspired. A movement is born; The Lonely Hearts Club (named after the band from Sgt. Pepper). Penny is suddenly known for her nondating ways... which is too bad, because there's this certain boy she can't help but like.

Review:

This book is a light and fun read. The story is about Penny Lane Bloom (yes, her parents are Beatles fan!) who swears off guys because of a failed relationship. She quietly starts a club that she calls, right, The Lonely Hearts Club. At first, she's all by herself until she finds out that her friends are also tired of wasting their time on guys. And the rest follows.

The characters are funny and witty. I never thought of having this kind of club back when I was in highschool. This book made me think of my high school days. The dramas over boys, break ups, hanging out with your girlfriends or boyfriends. It's just funny how the concept can let you remember those days when you would also swear off boys because they broke your heart. I think the target audience of the book is teens and middle grade. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it.

The Lonely Hearts Club is an enjoyable read despite the cheesy teenage dramas. I liked the Beatles references and the simple idea that this book implies to its readers.
